Using Links

  1. Login to your website manager.
  2. Scroll down to a Resource Content (text editor) and select a bit of text. It can be one word or a few words or more. You can even select an image by clicking on it once.
  3. Now that you've selected some text (or an image), the Insert/Edit Link icon will be activated for you to click on, so click on it. It looks like this: insert link icon
  4. The Insert/Edit link window will pop up, and you are presented with several options.
  5. The first option is LINK URL. A URL is the address of a web page, such as http://modxtraining.com/using-links. If you are linking to a page on another website, you can paste it in the LINK URL box. You can even do this for a page on your own website, but it's not the best way...read on.
  6. To link to a page within your website, simply click on the LINK LIST menu. This menu will present you with a listing of all the pages within your site. Simply click the page  you want to link to.
  7. Once you have chosen a link either by filling in the LINK URL or choosing a page in your site from the LINK LIST menu, you can click INSERT and you are done. But there are some additional options we should go over.
  8. In the ANCHORS section, if your site has any anchors (jump-to sections) they will be listed here and you can append your link with an anchor. An anchor is a part of a page that you can define and link to it by appending the link URL with a # followed by the name of the anchor (example: http;//modxtraining.com/using-links#step8)...step8 is the name of the anchor.
  9. In the TARGET section, you can select if you want the link to open in the same window (which is the default), open in a new window (_blank), open in a parent window/frame (_parent) -- this is the same as the same window, unless your site uses frames, then it will open in the same frame as the link is in, or open in top frame, which, if your site uses frames, will replace all the frames. In most cases, you'll leave this alone, unless you want to open the link in a new tab or window. This is usually only recommended if you are linking to a page from another website.
  10. You can give your link a title in the TITLE section. This will not show up on the page, but can be useful for users with screen readers. The title should be a word or phrase that describes the page you are linking to.
  11. The CLASS selection menu may or may not have any options to pick. If your designer/developer set up special classes to determine how certain links should display, those classes will be available here.
  12. In the POPUP tab, you can use the settings in that section to create a popup window with the link. First, check the Javascript popup box, fill in the URL field, Window name field, size you want the window to be (width x height), position the window should be on the user's screen (recommend c/c for center), and the other miscellaneous options below that. It's pretty self-explanatory, but keep in mind, most users do not like popup windows so only use this feature in extreme cases.
  13. The EVENTS and ADVANCED tabs are for advanced users only and are outside the scope of this tutorial.
  14. When you are done setting up your link, be sure to click INSERT at the bottom and you will see your text show up as a clickable link.
  15. Don't forget to SAVE the page when you are done.
